Referencing with search and
indexing engines

This part explains why it is necessary, from site design, to take into consideration referencing with search and indexing engines. At present, search and indexing engines are virtually the SOLE means in existence of getting found by Web surfers. So it is of cardinal importance to pay particular attention to this aspect of your site, on pain of being unknown by search engines and so by Web surfers.

Search and indexing engines
These are the tools most used by Web surfers to find the information wanted. In general, information is sought by combining two or more key words. A single word very often gives results that are too random, for example 530,000 pages found containing the word "xxx". There are currently around 800 search engines. Some of them "vacuum" the whole Internet at intervals to find and index new sites.

There are general search engines, engines that are exclusively "Business to business", some that specialise in one branch (for example aviation or services).

Although it is always possible to wait to be referenced by the engines, the best solution nonetheless consists of submitting your site directly to search engines by connecting to them and completing a form on-line. This is faster, you are certain of being referenced, and with some engines you are able to choose and so control the text summarising the content of the site.

Indexing directories contain Internet sites classified by themes and sub-themes: for example, there is a leisure directory with sub-directories covering "sport", "art", "music", etc. which are themselves split into themes such as "skiing", "sailing" etc., and so on. It is preferable to register manually with these sites so as to choose the most suitable heading.

Currently, search and indexing engines are changing very fast. Our business is to monitor the changes from day to day and help you to benefit from our expertise.

The "200"
The essential point for a company wanting a site on the Internet is to be properly referenced to be displayed in the first 200 Web pages found by the engines, at the risk of not being found by Web surfers.
It is of crucial importance to be shown on the first 100 or 200 when a Web surfer runs a search corresponding to your site. Beyond 200, your site has no prospect of being seen. Either it won’t even be displayed by the search engine, or Web surfers will long since have found what found what they were looking for.

So it is necessary to know just how these search engines work, to make it easy for them for relevant indexing and then to submit your site or have it submitted to the search and indexing engines.

The next chapter contains some examples with notes that can be inserted into the pages of an Internet site.
